Event description
Join artist Yifan Jing (Zorg) for a unique participatory drawing experience inspired by the Chinese masterpiece Along the River During the Qingming Festival. Together, we’ll capture the life and spirit of London’s Trinity Wharf — its lighthouse, historic warehouses, passing ships, and modern skyline — and transform it into one continuous handscroll that tells a story of time, migration, and everyday life by the water.
This workshop reimagines an ancient tradition through a modern lens — blending community sketching with panoramic storytelling. Whether you’re an artist or a beginner, you’ll help bring to life a living portrait of the Wharf: people walking by, cranes at work, reflections on the Thames. Every line adds to a shared visual journey through past and present London.
Workshop Flow
1. Introduction (15 min) – Learn about Trinity Wharf’s 200-year maritime history and the inspiration behind panoramic scrolls.
2. Sketch Walk (45 min) – Take a guided stroll by the river, sketching buildings, details, and life scenes in black-and-white Sharpie.
3. Scroll Creation (75 min) – Back in the gallery, contribute your drawings to a 4–6 metre handscroll combining historical and contemporary imagery.
4. Reflection (15 min) – View the finished scroll together — a visual journey through the Wharf’s evolving story.
The final Trinity Panorama will later be displayed locally as part of a community exhibition celebrating London’s riverfront life.
About the Inspiration: “Along the River During the Qingming Festival”
Dating back to China’s Song Dynasty, Along the River During the Qingming Festival is one of the world’s most celebrated handscrolls. It depicts a day in the life of an ancient riverside city — merchants, travellers, families, boats, bridges — all flowing together in one long, continuous narrative.
Harbour Scroll: The Trinity Panorama brings this spirit to Britain’s waterfronts. Like the ancient scroll, it transforms observation into storytelling — showing how life along the river remains ever-changing yet deeply connected across centuries and cultures.
