A celebration of movement in drawing through the ancient motif of a spiral.
The spiral form is so familiar to us, it is a shape we might doodle when on the phone or bored during meetings or in the classroom. It is probably one of the first shapes we draw as children when we learn to hold a crayon. As a motif it has been widely used throughout human history, dating back as far as 10,000BCE. Spirals are everywhere we look in nature- the middle of sunflowers, shells, pinecones, DNA and galaxies!
Big Spiral Draw will celebrate this beautiful, elegant form. The hall will be open all weekend (Saturday 5th 11:30-5pm, Sunday 6th 11am- 5pm): you can simply drop in and draw. There will be a wide range of different media to try out, and inspirational material to help inspire from the world of art, and from nature. The Big Draw theme of movement fits in perfectly, we will explore ways to draw big and small; how we might use our whole arm to make marks. You will be guided and helped with this according to your mobility. The spiral form can be relaxing and meditative to draw, so I hope this will be a meaningful, communal experience. Artist Irene Blair will be joining in.
Sound Spirals: Saturday afternoon, 3pm-5pm, there will be a special music session with musician-composers Peter McLaren and Rufus Elliott. They both have an enthusiastic interest in spirals. Peter says: 'Life, music and art lift us, whirl us and steady us in an endlessly convoluting, involuting, spiralling dance.' You will be invited to draw in response to the music, let's see what happens!
The Skye Circus Skills will be coming to the hall on Wednesday evening, 7:30-9:30pm, to team up with Lochalsh Life Drawing. They will be dressed as Super Heroes and will use ribbons to make spirals. Drawers will be encouraged to draw fast and free, and to work communally. This session is £10. No experience required. This is a clothed session.
Thursday Drawing with Sarah. If you can't make it to Kirkton Hall I am hosting a Free Zoom session in which you will be invited to draw spirals using any materials that come to hand in a guided session. Thursday 3rd October 5:30-6:30pm.
In addition, I am bringing the spiral experience on the road with to a school, a nursery, Airdferry (a daycare centre for older people) and Kyleakin Connections (a group for adults with learning disabilities). The results will be on display in the hall for the open weekend.
Please come along to Kirkton Hall and join in with the Big Spiral Draw. No experience is required and I especially welcome those who think they can't draw- everyone can draw! There will be tea, coffee, juice, cakes and even some spiral biscuits. FREE (apart from Wednesday Life Drawing). Funded by Lochalsh Community Council, National Lottery Community Fund.
